FIRST JOURNAL ENTRY, JANUARY 18th, 2017
“Buy the ticket, take the ride.”
-Hunter S. Thompson
Seven, One, One, Seven was the date I was supposed to launch this site, but it’s now late into the 17th and I’m still typing – I don’t know how to begin. Do I start with a hello, a kind word or kiss on the cheek? Maybe with a handshake, but what’s in a handshake? My best friend and I once argued the night away on this subject. He believed you can tell a lot about a person by the way they shook your hand. I disagreed. I believe simply knowing that people think that calls into question the entire experiment. A handshake can often mean a lot, and sometimes it can mean nothing, and other times a hand is shaken out of habit, or with ulterior motives altogether. Of course, I could just say ‘welcome, and thanks for stopping by’ – but I might save that for later.
It’s been many years since I wrote a journal, and I’ve never written one for the public eye. A simple ‘hello’ or ‘good morning’ seemed a little trite. I guess it doesn’t matter how I begin, I know sooner or later, I’ll come will regret it, and think of many ways I could have done it better.
By now you are most likely wondering why you’re reading a journal by someone who is struggling to start one – good point. I, myself, am a little confused as to why I’m writing one at all. If I’m honest, I am here for one purpose and one purpose alone: to get a novel published.
When I grow up, I want to be an author. I love writing. I write everyday, and have so since I can remember. It is my dream to publish a book. But I have never shared my writing before – and this is, in part, why I’m here.
Why a blog? You may ask. There’s enough out there. Why add another to a riverbed already full of delusional pebbles? Why one more drop into a raging torrent of opinion? Surely, the great pyramid needs no more stone. I’m doing it because they say the best chance to get published these days is to establish an online following – and that’s really why I’m here, no bullshit, this is just a shameless attempt at success. I tell you the truth because I am aware how hollow this is, so each time I make such vulgar reaches, I’ll accompany it with this: . This is my Shameless Attention Grab counter. I’ll update it every time I promote myself, and hopefully it’ll keep me humble and keep you, reading.
I didn’t, until recently have any idea how to start a website. I was encouraged by a very talented friend – who has a blog of his own – to create this site and enlisted the help of another wonderfully talented friend (you can find his mercifully helpful company here). I read other people’s pages, and jerked out the confidence to start writing myself. In my research, I came across Pinchie’s Drawings and fell in love with their style. I was honoured when she agreed to contribute to this page, and I hope my words can do justice to her art.
I divided this site into three sections. The first is the Baked Wombat blog. It will play host to a long list of my verbal excretions; articles and opinions I’ve written on any topic that ignites my passion, and may feature submissions others who wish to contribute.
As much as this is a platform for my own dreams, this site is also about you. In the Writer’s Workshop, there is a place for everybody. Here, I hope to create a community of budding writers, clueless authors like myself, gain a readership for us all and inspire those who have never considered trying, to join. If you have ever contemplated writing, or have an opinion you wish to share please do, I take submissions here. So come write with me, and hopefully the dream will come true for us all.
The last section is ChristopherSangiolo.com, this is where you’ll find me. The area devoted to selling my work and I guess, myself too. This is where you’ll find this journal, which will chronicle the journey to my dream. It may not be day by day, it may be formless, timeless, non-linear and without context, it may be raw, under edited and seldom updated. I can’t guarantee a happy ending, I cannot even guarantee you good grammar; but with a little luck it’ll be a good story for everybody who reads it.
But where’s this novel? Where’s this dream you’ve been harking on about? Here. Last year I started a new book from scratch which I’ll upload as it’s ready, to be read by you online. This entire website is dedicated to the pursuit of becoming an author, and I invite everyone alone for the ride.
So, consider this a preamble, a foreword and disclaimer. Consider this a prologue to a great adventure still to come, but above all, consider this a greeting and introduction into my world. I don’t expect to succeed or anyone to read my words, but know I’d be forever grateful if you did.
Welcome, and thanks for stopping by.
